The Case for Books...

My students need a place to store books. We need a mobile library, a book center that can store big books, a storage unit for our listening center and a book organizer.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember misplacing your keys, a book you're reading or your cellphone? Do you remember the level of frustration that came along with searching through piles of "stuff"? My students experience this frustration every time they search for a book in our classroom library.

I work with twenty-five students of differing abilities.

Twenty-four of them are my full-time students and one student from an Autism Spectrum classroom mainstreams with me for approximately 80% of the school day. Almost half of my students do not speak English at home. We live in an economically disadvantaged community and all of my students are eligible for free lunch. Despite the many obstacles of living and attending school in an inner-city my students are hard-working, resilient and highly motivated. They are eager to learn and enthusiastic about school. While all of my parents work full-time they often volunteer whatever free time they have available to assist in the classroom. We have a great partnership that bridges the gap between home and school. My students are some of the hardest workers I have ever encountered. They work twice as hard with half as many resources and still manage to keep smiles on their faces. They are an inspiration to us all.

My Project

These resources will greatly improve my student's experiences with our books. Without bookshelves, or organizational materials books cannot be selected or used properly. The students have difficulty locating their favorite books when they want to curl up in the library. Also, we need the organization case for our listening center. Each time a student wants to listen to a story I climb on a chair and pull down a plastic bin that contains the listening center materials. How much nicer would it be for the students to have easy access to these books on CD? Using these bins I can level the books and organize the library by genre. With these great resources my students will be able to browse through our library freely and choose a story to read. It also will be easy for them to place their books back where they belong. Students will learn how to select a just-right book, enjoy the magic of reading, and clean up after themselves by placing the book back in its proper bin. You can't go wrong!

We cannot expect students to love reading if we don't provide them with organized child-friendly libraries.
