My students need track & field hurdles, GrabBalls, scooter-boards, scarves, a ring-toss kit, a body sock, jumping stone kit, and other specialized gross motor equipment.

My Students

Can you remember trying to practice a skill and it just not "clicking"? Well, the students which I work with have similar feelings when they are learning and practicing their gross motor skills in Adapted Physical Education class.

The students who are in Adapted Physical Education class all have moderate/severe disabilities which impacts their ability to perform gross motor skills.

These are students who are unable to be a part of a General Education PE class, either because of their physical, cognitive, or even emotional needs. I work with students of all ages, from first grade through high school. They all attend Special Day Classrooms which focus on teaching skills at a level which meets their learning needs. I am a very lucky teacher because all of my students are highly motivated and enthusiastic about coming to class!

My Project

The equipment which I have asked for will make a direct impact on the students which I work with because it is equipment that is specific to my student's learning needs. I have chosen equipment which will give the students the best opportunity to have success while they practice their skills. I have found that using this type of equipment creates a strong desire for the students to continue practicing and building their skill level. The equipment which I have asked for will help my students in two main areas: movement and sports skills. Students will be able to use equipment which helps teach them to run, leap, jump, throw, catch, kick, and strike...and best of all, it is developmentally appropriate for them!

In the 6 years I have been an Adapted PE Specialist I have seen amazing progress with the students I have worked with.

A large part of this improvement is due to the fact that I have been lucky enough to have specialized equipment to use with them. Although my students work on basic skills, when they learn a new skill their is a sense of confidence in themselves and their abilities which comes with it. Thank you for continuing to make a difference with students who have special needs!
