My Students

Have you ever measured how far you walk during the day? My class has started measuring how many feet we walk when we walk up and down the stairs in a week. It would be a great extension to measure how many steps our class takes in a day. We need pedometers to help us measure our steps that we take.

My students are enthusiastic learners.

They are all English as Second Language Learners. They need lots of visuals and hands-on activities to help them learn. They are 2nd graders in a public school in New York. My class loves to learn new things and work with new tools to enhance their learning.

My Project

My students have started to really understand measuring with feet and miles recently. They love to make connections to their lives with how far something away something is. We are located on the third floor of a large school and spend a lot of time walking up and down stairs. For my students to be able to measure how far they walk in a day in school would allow us to complete so many activities. We would be able to compare how far we walked on one day to how far we walk on another day. My students would be able keep track of how much exercise they are getting and relate it to our classroom learning. We could make charts and graphs to keep track of their steps. There are multiple connections to our math curriculum that the pedometers would be used for.

The pedometers would increase my students' mathematical learning and promote exercise.

My class would work on explaining why they took less steps on say Wednesday than on Monday. They could think and implement ways to bring their step counts up. I think that these pedometers would be fantastic motivators and a great mathematical connection to our curriculum.
