Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are told to not judge a book by its cover. However, what if that book has no cover and several pages are missing. It would be impossible to not judge that book.
My students are a lively, creative, and passionate group of individuals.
Most of their parents are unemployed and live off of public assistance. However, they do not let their situation define who they are. They are all motivated and have dreams for the future. Several of my students want to be lawyers or doctors so that they could help communities like theirs. They are all passionate about become successful individuals.
However, Hurricane Sandy has changed their lives. Parents have lost either businesses or cars. When they came back to school, you could notice the change in their spirits.
My Project
My classroom library is full of books that are taped together or are missing pages and covers. I have the opportunity to teach many strong readers, but my library severely lacks books that instantly grab their attention. As a result, these students have been reading books that do not challenge them. It is clearly apparent to me that my students want to find books that are high-interest, but also their reading level. Many of my students have approached me and have asked if I had more books for them to read. I, unfortunately, have a limited amount of books and funds.
With your generous donation my class will have the opportunity to find books that are high-leveled books, but also high-interest.
The 2 Nooks and books will motivate my students to become better readers. They have all gone through such a life changing event. I would like to provide them with that self-confidence that they previously had.
