My Students

Are you familiar with blogs, Glogster, Photostory, or Edmodo? My students use all of these applications and more to publish their writing. Images are a vital part of communicating now and digital cameras would help my students publish dynamic writing.

My school is an elementary school located on the outskirts of the city.

Our poverty index is 96.4. The student body is very diverse with about 20% of the population being English Speaker of Other Languages (ESOL). Our school has a technology focus which benefits students who do not have access to computers or the Internet at home.

My Project

Publishing a piece of writing used to involve students recopying what they wrote in their "best handwriting". Today technology has dramatically changed how students publish their thinking. They might create a blog, or design a digital poster (Glogster), or use Crazy Talk to allow animals to give voice to their thoughts. No matter which application students choose, communicating digitally is a dynamic, interactive, combination of text and images with boundless possibilities! Access to digital cameras will allow students to create digital images tailored to what they are trying to communicate. Currently they have to depend on free images available on the Internet. Searching for the "just right" image takes valuable time and often the school network blocks the most common sites to prevent students from being exposed to inappropriate images.

Though my students may have limited access to the most current technology and the means to create with it, what they have to say is still important.

Teaching them how to communicate effectively in the 21st century is vital to their success in life!
