I teach 20 fourth graders in an inner city school in South Carolina. Most of our children come from hard working, but struggling families. Our parents are often working two minimum wage jobs. They do not have the time or resources to help their children as much as they would like. Our PTO is very limited in the amount of support they can provide. Our students come from varied ethnic backgrounds, with many, especially the boys, scoring below grade level on state tests. They are eager to learn when given appropriate materials. I have noticed that they enjoy hands-on activities, reading with a small group, and that they gravitate toward nonfiction books or books based on real life events.
