Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was 13, I attended the very first Space Shuttle (Columbia) landing. I never forgot that moment. When it was announced that the Shuttle Endeavour was going to be displayed locally, it was only natural that I would develop a museum design project for my advanced architecture class.

My students are high school aged, primarily from low-income families, and very often are the first college-bound members of their families.

The students choose to be here, are all interested in architecture, and have the talent to showcase their ideas on paper and computer screens. The school is a Magnet, and we draw students from all over the city. Some of them travel over an hour each way to attend my classes. The school creates an environment that encourages life-long learning and our college placement rate is over 95%. Many of our former students have graduated from college and are currently working as architects and designers.

My Project

While we have a computer lab in the classroom, we have no way to make the students' projects portable. As part of our Space Shuttle Exhibit, the final presentations will take place at the site where the Shuttle Orbiter Endeavour will be displayed -- the California Science Center. The students are currently developing their exhibit designs with the assistance of museum installation designers and will be developing building concepts with the help of several architects -- all of whom visit the classroom regularly. The students have also created research reports, as PowerPoint presentations, to describe the evolution of the space program and the importance of the Shuttle program. Since the final presentations will be taking place outside of the classroom, we need a laptop computer so the compilation of the students' work can be portable. Through this project, my students will learn how to research, conceptualize, network, produce, model build, and present their work.

By donating to my program, you will be improving the technology we use and give us a chance to promote the students' outstanding work to important people at remote locations.

By giving us a chance to promote our architecture program beyond the walls of the classroom, we will have the opportunity to educate others, and invite more people to participate with us.
