My students need novels and box sets for the lending library, as well as 22 copies of The Elements of Style for grammar instruction.

My Students

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out.

Most of them are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one.

We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 10-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed.

My Project

In recent years, I have tried to introduce a small lending library into my classroom. It numbers only a few dozen books, but I am slowly picking up novels here and there to add to it. The most popular books seem to be box sets of series, like Harry Potter. More recently published novels, like The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones, have become very popular; I hope that by making these books available to my students, I will encourage them to take on new reading challenges and begin reading for fun on a regular basis.

This is where, I hope, you come in.

Without your donation, we will not be able to supply these students with books for the lending library. Your donation, no matter how small, will go towards helping my students improve their critical reading skills, in addition to giving them a positive experience with novels (something they have not had very often in their other schools). I hope that this helps them in their quest to continue on to college.
