We are in desperate need of fans in our classroom! Although we live in beautiful Hawaii, considered by most to be "paradise," we must endure hot and humid weather year-round. Most of Hawaii's public schools are not air-conditioned, forcing students to sit in hot and sticky classrooms all day.
My students are from diverse ethnic backgrounds and have low socioeconomic status.
80% of our entire student body is on free or reduced price lunch. Over 90% are from ethnic minority groups. We are a small, country school located on the island of Oahu. My students are simple kids, they enjoy getting outside and playing, being with family and friends, going to the beach, and are passionate about learning. My students are troopers, dealing with hot and humid days as best as we all can. I frequently use a water mister to cool them down and often work with the lights turned off in order to keep the room temperature down.
My Project
If I secure the fans, I will be able to turn on the lights more. Although it is nice to have natural lighting from outside as my classroom is lined with louvers, the kids are very uncomfortable during the day. Having circulating air throughout the day will help them focus on curriculum more easily and be more comfortable.
Having a "cool" classroom would help everyone's well-being and comfort.
It would help us to not be so exhausted and tired throughout the day. My last standing fan (shown in the picture) recently broke. Most days, there is no escape from the heat. We already go outside often for recess and PE and having a more comfortable and cool refuge in the classroom would make us all more happy campers!
