The scanner allows students to take real-world objects and turn them into digital 3D models that they can examine, modify, and ultimately 3D print. This process helps students understand how technology is used in fields such as engineering, product design, manufacturing, art, and digital modeling. Rather than simply learning about these concepts, students are able to actively participate in the entire design process—from capturing an object to creating and improving a digital model and producing a physical object.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students is seeing something from the real world become a digital creation and then come back to life as a physical 3D print. The color-changing and metallic PLA filaments have added another creative dimension, allowing students to think about both function and aesthetics when designing their projects. Students are learning that creating something often involves experimentation, problem-solving, and making improvements along the way. The ability to see a project develop from an idea into a finished object makes the learning experience especially memorable and rewarding.\r\n\r\nThis technology has particularly engaged students who enjoy building, creating, drawing, working with computers, or figuring out how things work. Some students who may not always be the most engaged with traditional classroom activities have become excited to participate when they can learn by making something tangible. The 3D scanner and printer have provided students with another way to express their creativity, demonstrate their skills, and build confidence while developing valuable technology and problem-solving skills. I am incredibly grateful to the donors who made these experiences possible and helped bring this type of innovative, hands-on learning into our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1677938779189,"projectUrl":"project/3d-scanner-to-enhance-our-3d-learning-ex/7214645/","projectTitle":"3D Scanner To Enhance Our 3D Learning Experience","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hironaka","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7930390"},{"teacherId":7930390,"projectId":8038615,"letterContent":"Your generous donation of the R QIDI TECHNOLOGY X-PLUS3 3D printer and ABS filament has opened up an exciting new world of hands-on learning for our students. Instead of simply learning about design, engineering, and technology through books or screens, students can now take an idea from their imagination, design it digitally, and actually hold the finished product in their hands. The 3D printer gives students opportunities to practice problem-solving, perseverance, measurement, design thinking, and creativity while seeing how concepts they learn in class can be applied to real-world projects.\r\n\r\nWhat excites our students most is the ability to create something that is truly their own and watch it come to life. The speed and capabilities of the new printer allow us to move from an idea to a physical prototype much more quickly, which makes experimentation especially engaging. Students can design, print, test, identify what needs to change, and try again. This process has helped turn mistakes into learning opportunities and has encouraged students to take risks, ask questions, and become more confident in their ability to solve problems.\r\n\r\nThe students who have especially warmed to the technology are those who love building, creating, and figuring out how things work. It has also been wonderful to see students who may not always see themselves as successful in traditional classroom activities become deeply engaged when they can learn through making. The printer has given them a meaningful way to demonstrate their creativity and strengths while developing skills that connect directly to engineering, technology, and future careers. Instead of simply learning concepts through videos, worksheets, or demonstrations, students can now design, build, test, and improve their own creations. 3D printing gives students a hands-on way to practice problem-solving, spatial reasoning, measurement, creativity, and perseverance. Having multiple printers also allows more students to participate in the design-and-making process, rather than having to wait for a single printer to become available.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is seeing their ideas become real, physical objects. The dual-color, silk, and specialty filaments have added an especially fun creative element because students can experiment with color, appearance, and design while learning how different materials behave during printing. Students who enjoy drawing, building, tinkering, or working with technology have particularly embraced the printers, but I have also seen students who may not typically consider themselves \"tech\" students become interested because 3D printing combines creativity with hands-on problem-solving. The ability to make something, discover that it doesn't work as expected, make changes, and try again teaches students that mistakes are a valuable part of the learning process.\r\n\r\nThis project has helped create a classroom environment where students are not just consumers of technology—they are creators, designers, and problem-solvers. The printers and materials have given students opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, troubleshoot challenges, and take ownership of their learning. Most importantly, the excitement of watching a design take shape layer by layer has helped students see that their ideas have value and that they have the ability to create something meaningful with the technology available to them.","fullyFundedDate":1667208539198,"projectUrl":"project/a-next-generation-classroom-with-3d-prin/6951120/","projectTitle":"A Next Generation Classroom with 3D Printing","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hironaka","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7930390"},{"teacherId":7930390,"projectId":6263646,"letterContent":"Your generous donation of the FlashForge Adventurer 3 3D printer and the variety of PLA filament has opened up an exciting new world of hands-on learning for my students. Watching a digital design slowly become a tangible object has made learning feel much more meaningful and exciting. The rainbow and metallic filaments have added another creative dimension, allowing students to think not only about how something works, but also about how it looks and how they can personalize their projects. Even students who may not typically volunteer or consider themselves \"technology students\" have been drawn to the printer because it provides a concrete, visual way to experiment and create.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project has been seeing students who are naturally curious, creative, or interested in building and making become deeply engaged. Students who enjoy figuring out how things work have embraced the design-and-print process, while artistic students have discovered that 3D printing can be another form of creative expression. The printer has also encouraged students to learn from mistakes: when a design doesn't work the first time, they can troubleshoot, make adjustments, and try again. With these new texts, we use interactive read-alouds and guided book clubs to push far beyond basic plot summaries. Students are learning to analyze character motivations, cite specific evidence to back up their claims, and examine an author's craft—exploring how precise word choices build suspense or shift a story's tone. These books give us rich, complex narratives to practice making nuanced inferences, identifying central themes, and evaluating different perspectives, turning raw reading ability into sharp literary analysis and empathy.\r\n\r\nDuring reader's workshop, the classroom transforms into a hive of quiet focus and excited collaboration: you'll see students sprawled out on the rug with sticky notes marking key quotes, debating plot twists in literature circles, or scribbling thoughts in reading journals. These particular books have made the biggest splash with our reluctant readers and English language learners. Having fresh, relevant, and accessible texts has removed the barrier of intimidation. One student, who previously struggled to stay engaged for five minutes during independent time, now rushes to finish their classwork early just to spend extra time with their book. Seeing relatable characters and high-stakes plots has transformed reading from a daily chore into something they actively look forward to.\r\n\r\nYour support provided more than just physical pages; it sparked a culture of confidence and curiosity. My students couldn't wait to try them out, and they have quickly become one of the most valuable learning resources in our room. Having access to flexible physical posture options during direct instruction and independent work time has transformed our daily routine. Instead of forcing every student into a traditional seated desk, these flexible workstations allow students to choose an option that best fits how their bodies and minds learn best.\r\n\r\nThe impact on our overall classroom focus and learning environment has been remarkable. For my students with ADHD or those who naturally struggle to sit still for long periods, the ability to stand while working has given them a healthy, non-disruptive outlet for their energy. They are able to stay deeply engaged in lessons without the frustration of trying to hold still. Additionally, these desks have created a breakthrough for my students with ASD, including one student in particular who frequently struggled to stay awake during quiet class time. Standing up while completing assignments keeps them alert, active, and fully present in our daily instruction.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue integrating movement into our daily instruction, teaching students how to self-regulate and recognize when their bodies need a break or a shift in focus. We had some special learning experiences and are grateful for your support.\r\n\r\nRooted in Aloha design project:\r\nOur schoolʻs mission statement begins with the phrase, \"Rooted in Aloha.\" The phrase is seen daily on our school uniforms, planner covers, and campus signs. It accompanies an image of the kalo plant, which was the primary food crop and a sacred representation of life and family for generations of Hawaiian families.\r\n\r\nOur students had the opportunity to imagine their own Rooted in Aloha design featuring kalo, and to learn more about being creators. Their designs were converted into line art on Canva, in order to make waterproof stickers for reusable drink containers and vinyl transfers for canvas bags.\r\n\r\nThe funding for Donors Choose provided the inkjet printer, waterproof stickers, glass tumblers, cotton canvas bags, and iron-on vinyl. Students gave the glass tumbler featuring their own waterproof sticker to a parent as a mahalo gift (thank you). Students kept their bags after showing their finished project to the whole school during a lunchtime showcase. When students from other grades were asked if they would want to create their own Rooted in Aloha design, dozens of students raised their hands. This project was intended to inspire creativity and empowerment for both the students who made their own design, and for others who will see it.\r\n\r\nMea Kanu, Mea ʻAi projects:\r\nAdditional projects that were possible through Donors Choose supplies included learning about culturally significant food plants, and learning to prepare foods known as ʻcanoe plantsʻ.\r\n\r\nOur mea kanu projects involved saving seeds from Kabocha squash, germinating squash seeds at school and/or at home, planting ʻuala (sweet potato) for future mea ʻai activities, and planting kalo to observe for the Rooted in Aloha design project.\r\n\r\nOur mea ʻai projects included making nutrient rich recipes including lau ʻuala green smoothies, maiʻa-mango popsicles, and maiʻa-chocolate-oat energy balls. Students also taste-tested nutrient rich foods prepared in the air fryer, including roasted sweet potato, potato, squash, and apples.\r\n\r\nBoth the mea kanu and mea ʻai projects incorporated 3rd grade skills including skip counting, multiplication, division, fractions, liquid volume measurement, reading comprehension, multi-step instructions, listening comprehension, speaking, individual responsibility and teamwork.\r\n\r\nAlthough the photos that are included will not show the studentsʻ faces, they were excited and eager to do the mea ʻai activities, and proud to see their designs featured on real products.\r\n\r\nWe are grateful for the financial support to do these activities. This technology allows me to provide immediate, high-color visual feedback that resonates with young learners much more deeply than a simple grade on a paper. It bridges the gap between doing the work and feeling the pride of accomplishment.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for the students has been the interactive nature of the pocket chart and Shrinky Dink milestone markers. There is a palpable energy in the room when a student realizes they've earned a new tag; they don't just receive it, they \"vibe\" with the success as they hear the click of the hole puncher and the snap of the keyring. They love the \"clinking\" sound their lanyards make as they walk—it's the sound of their own hard work. For my students, these aren't just pieces of cardstock; they are medals of honor that turn the often-invisible process of learning into a visible, wearable collection of triumphs.\r\n\r\nI have been especially moved by several of my more quiet, reserved students who previously struggled to stay engaged with long-term goals. One student in particular, who often felt overwhelmed by math, has completely \"warmed\" to this system. The technology-driven visuals provided a roadmap he could finally follow. Seeing his first tag laminated and hanging on his bag gave him the \"spark\" he needed; he now checks the pocket chart every morning to see how close he is to his next goal.
