Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Have you ever tried to learn how to do something new? Was it easy or hard? I teach first graders who are having problems learning how to read. My goal is to bring these children's literacy skills to the average of their peers. During their time with me, they gain confidence and independence.

I am a Reading Recovery teacher in a high poverty school.

Every student at my school now eats free breakfast and lunch daily. Many of my students are unable to afford winter coats, field trip money or even basic school supplies. The caring teachers at my school often provide the most basic needs for our students. At the same time, we are trying to teach them to become lifelong, productive learners. Reading is one of the most important skills that they need in order to succeed. If you can read, you can do anything. I need fun and inventive ways to motivate them to read. They must be able to find and read books on their level.

My Project

A Kindle Fire and the protective cover will provide fun and meaningful opportunities for my students. They will be able to find just right books on their level as well as listen to books that may challenge them. The more students read, the more they learn. The Kindle Fire will inspire them to become better readers. With the Kindle Fire, we will also be able to play on-line reading games and activities on the Internet. I only have one computer in my classroom and this will be another way to access the Internet.

Working with the hardest to teach children is the most rewarding job in the world.

I get to see them grow every day. It is amazing what they know at the beginning of the year and what they know by the end of the year. In this digital era, I need other fun and motivating ways to inspire the love of reading in my students! Thank you for helping me reach this goal!
