Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every year I buy caterpillars for my first grade students. We watch them eat, form chrysalises and transform into butterflies. Just before we release them, we read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. Carle wrote several other books about bugs. My students would love to read those books, too.
My students go to a Title 1 school in South Florida.
Most of the children come from low-income households. The students in my class are learning to speak English. They are all Hispanic. Their parents come from Central and South America. The children are a dream. They are cute as only first graders can be, friendly and always eager to learn.
My Project
The children enjoy 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' so much that I would like to read them Eric Carle's other 'insect' books: 'The Grouchy Ladybug', 'The Very Quiet Cricket', 'The Very Clumsy Click Beetle', 'The Very Lonely Firefly' and 'The Very Busy Spider'. I notice that there are Spanish-language versions of two of these books. I think it would be a good idea if our classroom acquired these, also.
I'm sure that you are familiar with Eric Carle's 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. His other 'insect' books have the same kind of engaging story and illustrations. The children are sure to love them!
Please help me to capitalize on my students' enthusiasm for their butterfly project by introducing them to Eric Carle's wonderful series of 'insect' story books.
This would be a great way to improve my children's English and instill a love of literature in them.
