My students come from a low-income area and face daily difficulties that often affect their ability to be inspired. Many of my students struggle with English as a second language and are below grade level in reading for this reason.
We come from a small public school in a low income area.
Although our school could use many improvements, the small size, supportive staff, and wonderful students make it an ideal place to learn and grow. Despite their hardships, my students are thirsty for knowledge and are determined to succeed. I want to foster these needs by making school accessible, interesting and exciting for them. I believe the motivation of wanting to have the ability to read a high-interest book will help them gain confidence in their reading ability, which is necessary for improvement.
My Project
With a better selection of books in our class library, students will be more interested in reading. With class sets of books, I will be able to guide my students through a more in depth look at novels that inspire interest in all subject areas. I chose Chasing Vermeer as a class set because it incorporates math, art, science, puzzles, and mystery all into one great book, which will allow my students to create a deep connection and therefore a love of reading. Harriet the Spy is also a great book for my students to read.
My goal is to keep my students' days safe, exciting, and inspiring, so their thirst for knowledge continues when they are outside the classroom as well.
I want my students to become confident, lifelong readers, which is difficult to do with limited resources for books.
