My Students

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out.

Most of them are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one.

We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 10-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed.

My Project

In today's technology-driven society, Americans are constantly bombarded with instant messages, pop-up advertisements, spam e-mails, and a 24-hour news cycle that reports on even the most inane stories. Social networking sites like Facebook have changed the way that young people interact and communicate, possibly in a permanent way. In this world, it is crucial that students are exposed to literature that discusses and critiques these trends. What does it mean to have companies create "customer profiles" that suit e-mail advertising to your unique shopping habits? Are there drawbacks to being constantly connected to the internet or cell phones? As technology improves, how will society choose to use it? The answers to these questions are tricky, but the truly important thing is asking them in the first place. Feed, a groundbreaking young-adult novel by M.T. Anderson, does just that. In addition to 40 copies of this novel, we also need composition notebooks for reading logs.

This is where, I hope, you come in.

Without your donation, we will not be able to supply these students with the books they need for next year. Your donation, no matter how small, will go towards helping my students improve their critical reading skills, in addition to giving them a positive experience with novels (something they have not had very often in their other schools). I hope that this helps them in their quest to continue on to college.
