Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Across our classroom there is a roadway labeled "Cruising Through Our Levels." Each student has a car that moves along the road as they move their reading level. Students get so much satisfaction from seeing their car move. However, we need more resources in our classroom to help students "cruise."
In one 4th grade classroom we have per-emergent readers (learning to identify letters) to students who are reading at a high school reading level.
Our classroom is an integrated co-teaching classroom with 22 students, 8 are special education students, 9 are English Language Learners. About half of our students speak Spanish at home. 3 of our students have moved to the U.S. in the past year and are still acquiring basic English speaking skills. Most of our students come from a very low socio-economic background and have very few (if any) of their own books to read at home. Since many students do not have an English speaking parent or books at home, they rely heavily on all of our classroom resources to help them increase their reading level.
My Project
Currently we have very few independent language and reading activities for our students who are acquiring the English language. Many of these activities, like the magnetic boards and audio Cd's will allow them to increase their skills independently. These activities will also be beneficial to many of our Special Education students. The leveled library books will help increase the number of books students have to choose from on their level. It's essential that students are reading books on their level in order to improve. Finally, Junie B. Jones and My Weird School books are the most popular books in our classroom. However we only have a few books from each series. Our students will be so excited to see more of these books in our classroom.
Recently, one of our students moved her reading level for the first time this year.
It was a huge accomplishment for her. This was an amazing moment in our classroom. Without prompting, all of the students clapped for her. Our students are extremely supportive of each other, not only do they love to cruise through their levels they enjoy seeing their classmates do the same. Your donation will help us have more of these moments in our classroom throughout the year!
