Choices for Tomorrow

My students need 6 alternative energy resources, including a Wind Power Kit, a Solar Hydrogen Kit and a Solar Power Kit.

My Students

How will we power our future? Which sustainable energy sources will mankind rely upon to continue our existence on Earth? These are the questions facing my students as they learn about alternative energies and the impact of those technologies upon Earth's natural resources.

I developed and teach a high-interest environmental science class to capture the interests of my students who are disenchanted with school and indifferent to learning.

A large majority of students I survey each year believe they cannot “do” science or they find science “boring.” For some students this is because their previous science classes were heavily dependent upon textbook readings and recalling factual information, and not practicing inquiry. For other students, what they learned in science class never connected to their interests or their lives. Through my curriculum, I change those negative perceptions and get students involved, I apply science directly to their lives and interests, and I motivate my students to keep them coming back to class day after day. Most importantly, my students understand how science is done in the “real” world, using inquiry-based methods that enable students to generate, plan, and investigate their own experimental questions.

My Project

I selected alternative energy resources that will allow my students "hands-on" interactions and inquiry-based investigations. Students will be developing experiments that explore wind, solar, bio-diesel, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology. These resources will also help students understand how alternative energies can support sustainable living practices that minimize negative human impacts on Earth's resources.

Your help will make a difference for my students by giving them the tools to allow them access to "real-world" applications of science inquiry.

For many of my students this science class is often the first time they enjoy "doing" and learning science. Once learning has meaning to their lives,I see my students become interested in continuing their education beyond high school to college. Many students pursue degrees in science and engineering at the local community college and state universities.
