Building Confidence While Learning Math!

My students need a customizable whiteboard and dry erase markers for group math projects, geometry, graphing data, notes, skills practice and creating custom calendars.

My Students

My students need more alternative and hands-on activities to learn. Let's give them the opportunity. There are many blueprints for innovative learning, we just need the tools!

Aloha from Waimanalo!

The students here enjoy soaking up the sun and hanging out at the nearby beach shores of our small town. Although we have a rather small student population, our school plays a very large part in our community. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaii and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Students at our school are very easy going and also easy to please. Teaching my students is very rewarding because they are appreciative for even the littlest of things such as: finding an extra binder for a student to have or opening your classroom at recess for a place to work. They are the group of kids that make you want to go above and beyond for.

My Project

My students are all eager to learn but to achieve success they must each overcome the unique challenges presented before them. I teach special education math for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders. On a daily basis we come together to tackle the challenging concepts of middle school math. Many of the students in my classes learn best through trial and error, practice, teamwork, organization, and using a medium they enjoy. The customizable whiteboard would allow them the opportunity to do group projects, create charts/graphs, manage data and solve problems including geometry on a large-scale while catering to their learning strengths. Students told me that they enjoy using dry erase markers so much because it is easy to fix mistakes and change your answer. This made a lot of sense because many of my students understand the concepts, but lack the self-confidence to follow through. Solving and creating math problems on this board would be the ultimate confidence booster!

In our class the idea of teamwork comes first.

This whiteboard will help to bring my students together because everything that goes on it will be for everyone. It will also provide them the opportunity to use skills that would otherwise be too difficulty on another medium (ex. creating graphs). Funding this project will allow my students to achieve a type of success in math they have never experienced before and will help to build their confidence in one of the most challenging subjects of all.
