Animals Adapt

My students need a collection of books describing animal adaptations in their habitats, and an animal adaptation game.

My Students

Ask any child and they can tell you immediately the name of their favorite animal! My third-grade class is in a Title 1 low-income school where more than 70% of the kids receive free and reduced lunch. Additionally, English Language Learners comprise over 60% of our population.

Most of our school day is spent learning Language Arts and Math.

On rare occasions we can find a free slot of time to work in a science lesson. Even more rare are the science experiments that we can incorporate into a lesson and the funding for materials is limited or drastically reduced this year. Understanding how animals survive in our world is a 3rd grade science standard where the need for additional resources to accommodate the bare-bones science materials that accompanies our program is even greater, and allows my students to investigate habitats with increased interest. Kids love science and I would like to encourage that love of learning science by making it more understandable with these colorful, high-quality materials that supplement our science textbook.

My Project

"Zoobooks" magazine contains amazing photographs of actual animals and the kids just love them! Along with these texts, I have requested a variety of habitat books so every child can have a book or magazine in their own hands and they will no longer have to wait to read something exciting and interesting. Learning about animal adaptations is a subject my students find fascinating. A culminating activity that is always a hit is when they get to create their own adaptations for their favorite animals. After reading even more about animals and their environments, I know their creations will be even more spectacular!

Even though we place emphasis on learning the basics at our school, science is just as important to a well-rounded curriculum.

Who knows what spark we may ignite in our future "scientists" as they use these hands-on materials? If you want to see engaged students, just start a science experiment! Thank you for your consideration in helping my students.
