This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Independence and cooperation is an important skill for me to teach my second graders. Teaching them to be critical thinkers involves fostering an independence through choices in their own learning. They need easy access to materials in stations so they can choose their own learning activities.

My students attend a Title 1/ Bilingual School.

They come from an area where it is common to attend multiple schools in a short span of time. Families come and go and school is sometimes the most stable part of their lives. I have been teaching in this area for 24 years and it is important to me that school be a safe place for them. These students learn that our class is a family and we are all there for the same purpose: To become lifelong learners. They amaze me every day with their ability to overcome circumstance and we celebrate their achievements daily.

My Project

The organizational supplies I am requesting are designed to give students a sense of independence in their learning. Daily 5 is a program that uses learning stations to practice and explore reading and math skills both independently and in small groups. Being able to choose their learning activities fosters ownership of their learning. They need to have a variety of books and manipulatives ready at all times in order to work efficiently throughout the day. These supplies will allow me to create stations for reading and math that are organized and kid-friendly.

This project is important because my goal is to teach my students to love learning.

If I can catch them at an early age and show them that they can choose success, then I can send them off at the end of the year better prepared to be independent learners and critical thinkers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
