Learning History Through Biographies

My students need biographies, such as A Horn for Louis, Ceasar Chavez, Ghandi and much more, to learn about the world in which they live.

My Students

What great way to learn about the word than through the story of individuals struggle and triumph? My students do!!

I work in a highly diverse school with more than 75% Free and Reduced price lunch.

For some of my students, entry into the school is their first exposure to English. There are 11 languages represented. Many parents speak very limited English. These students have caring parents who are involved in their education; however, the resources they can afford them, such as books, are rare at home, especially books they can read. Many of my students’ families rely on school to support their children's educational needs.

My Project

These biographies are much needed to support the upcoming unit on Narrative Nonfiction. In this biography unit, students will learn about real people who have done remarkable things, whom many have changed the world. They will also learn about these specific people’s trials, tribulations, and triumphs. They will learn that these people, like us, faced adversity and relied on others to help them through obstacles (hardship). Students will not only learn about the specific famous people, but also about the world.

Please help us bring these biographies into our classroom.

Our resource is very limited. As of today, we only have one bin full of biographies. We need multiple copies at various levels, so we can all be engaged in reading and learning about the history!
