Creating the Space: Serenity in the Making

My students need light shades, essential oils, sharpies, and snacks.

My Students

My students were having conflicts on the play yard everyday at recess and lunch time. I started trying to create a calming effect in the classroom with essential oil sprays and rewards. However they don't last long. I also know that the fluorescent lights are harsh and can be covered.

My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic.

Most of our students are bused in from high poverty areas and receive free or reduced lunch. Very little money is raised from our parent population due to unemployment, low rages, and high-poverty. Parents have a difficult time responding to a list of required supplies due to lack of school funding, therefore it is up to the teachers. We have had two years of furlough days and we can no longer provide missing materials. So our students have learned to use what little resources available. Often very little attention is given to the classroom environment and the calm it should provide in order for students to be able to concentrate. My students are third graders and have conflicts everyday in which I have to clear before they are able to focus. I use essential oil spray to clam them down with they come in and it helps them. I also provide incentives for the extra effort they give to the class when they go above and beyond.

My Project

To be able to cover the harsh lighting from fluorescent lights would provide a calming atmosphere in the classroom. That extra energy saved from stressful lighting would be used for learning and concentration. They would be able to sustain longer attention. (The Sharpies are used for art!) The oil sprays calm my students down after coming in from stressful play during recess and lunch. I already use them every day when they come in. The scent clams them and settles them down from all the conflicts that happen when they go out on the yard to play. They can then get to school work without holding on to the stress. They are able to focus on their breathe and become more centered. I am able to get them to focus on the learning because they have let go of tension.

We are living in a very stressful time in America.

Our children are experiencing the same stresses that we adults feel. The difference is that can't always understand and don't have the tools available to deal with those stresses. If I can make the classroom a haven and a place to rejuvenate, then my students will be able to strengthen their lives and find their mission in life. Schools need to be about students happiness. The class environment can add to that serenity we all seek.
