My students are bused in and qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. We are primarily 95% African-American in Los Angeles, Calif. The school is lucky to raise even a thousand a year, our parents are either unemployed, low-wage workers, or single-parents. Last year I didn't even have a computer or printer in the room. This year things are slowly changing. My students lack many essentials. I felt I could at least start when some items that we all take for granted. My students are eager to learn and because they are coming from impoverished backgrounds, many of these items do not exist in the home. I have students who have never seen a calculator and most have never used one. I was teaching the vocabulary word "luxury" and one of my students blurted out, "meatballs". At first I thought how much he didn't understand, and then it hit me that he had probably heard his parent say it was a luxury to have meatballs. Maybe food would be something I should ask for.
