Don't Take It For Granite

My students need rock specimens and corresponding posters to be able to identify the three types of rocks, naming the specific rock types that are most common in our area

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Look at this rock I found...what is it??!! This question has been asked of me dozens of times each day by my students while they are reading about Geology in their textbooks. Pictures can say a thousand words, but using hands on materials can be priceless.

My students are crazy about rocks right now!

We are in the middle of our Earth Science unit, and my fourth graders are amazed at the mountains surrounding our city, and digging up their yards to find rocks. Our school is mid-sized, but extremely impoverished, so these materials are essential for students to distinguish between the three types of rocks. They are voracious learners when it comes to science, so I am so excited to give them an opportunity to handle rocks.

My Project

Students will have the chance to work in groups to compare rock types using charts and distinguishing characteristics described in the reference books. By the end of the project, students will have had the opportunity to have hands-on experience with all three types of rocks, and be able to distinguish between granite and andesite. In our city area, pyrite is very common, and students will be able to look at the mineral samples up close and then identify pyrite in igneous rock samples. Students will be able to describe the common rocks in our area and where rocks such as marble, sandstone, and granite originate.

Please help to make the difference by providing materials that supplement our textbook learning.

The rock kits will provide students with real-life examples of the rock cycle, and let students discover the importance rocks have in our lives (and especially pertain to the petrology industry that our city is part of!).
