Writing in the early years is an essential element in creating lifelong writers. One such way to motivate and create excited young writers is to initiate authentic writing experiences in the classroom. I would like a classroom mailbox and letter writing supplies for my kindergarten students. In this way my students would have access to materials to write letters to each other and people outside the classroom, and a mailbox to 'send' the letters. By creating this space in the classroom, students will be motivated to write letters to others. Firstly, the envelopes, stamps and special paper, along with the mailbox are inherently inviting to young children. Simply put, they will want to write in order to use the materials. Additionally, they will be able to send messages, notes and letters to each other during their time at the writing center. This will give them an exciting forum to practice the letter writing skills we have learned as a whole group. Finally, my kindergarteners do not often see people writing outside of school and do not understand that there are different purposes for writing. By creating a classroom mail center, my students will be able to use their growing knowledge of letters and sounds to create meaning for their own purposes-to send messages!
