My students need four Leapfrog Tag Readers and books to use during Daily Five or independent literacy time while I am working with groups or individuals.
My students' faces focus intently as I read stories aloud to them. They love to be taken away and let their imaginations soar as I read enthusiastically to them. By providing these Tag Readers and books, my students will be able to have this same experience when I am working with small groups.
I feel this school year is flying by, and I would like it to slow down!
It is due to the fact that this is one of the best groups of students I have ever taught in my seven years of teaching. They have such a desire to learn! My class consists of 19 bright kindergarten students. They always make me smile when they want to show me how well they know their sight words or when they even ask to practice spelling them! My students find reading fun and enjoyable. I hope to continue to instill this love for reading through these Tag Readers.
Our school is located in rural Missouri where many students do not have a variety of local resources available to them. There isn't even a free local community library for our students to access! For some of my students, this is the first time they have been in a classroom setting since they did not attend preschool. For these students, it is even more important to provide a rich environment of literacy resources.
My Project
In my classroom, I am beginning a new program called Daily Five. Daily Five is a structure which allows every student to be independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research-based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write.
Daily Five is a structure that develops the daily habits of reading, writing, and working with peers. Daily Five is getting rave reviews from teachers across the country. One of the components to Daily Five is listening to reading. This is where the Tag Readers will come into play. My students will be able to utilize these interactive Tag Readers and variety of books to engage in reading. This will allow me to be able to work with small groups and individual students to focus on each student's learning needs.
I'm sure many of you remember when you first learned to read as a child.
I vividly remember the moment when it finally "clicked" for me. I had a toy that would read a story to you as you pressed under the words. It was called a Teach Me Reader (similar to the Tag Readers). I'll never forget looking at those words and finally being able to say them without the help of the machine. I hope to provide that same feeling for my students when it will finally "click" for them!
