Science by the Sea: Math and Science Ocean Field Trip

My students need to experience the wonders of the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay Aquarium which is just a short 3 hour bus ride from our school site.

My Students

Can you imagine not ever seeing the ocean, putting your bare feet into the salty sea or simply closing your eyes to feel the power of the Pacific? Every year I survey my new students to understand their life experiences. Yearly, 20-30% of my students tell me they have never seen the ocean.

I teach at a wonderful Title 1 school with a diverse population of 7th and 8th graders.

Although only 2 hours to San Francisco and 3 hours from Monterey, we are an inner city school with inner city students. I have the pleasure of teaching the most inquisitive Science students. However, many of my students have barely been beyond the city limits for a variety of reasons. Reasons include family income and the responsibility my students may have when they leave the school site to go home. Many must help with family and many families simply cannot afford time away for a day at the sea. I admire the dignity with which my students carry on but I also know from their writings that they are still children not quite ready for the jump to high school. I know they long to be children just a bit longer. Middle school is a tough time and I am hoping to give my kids an experience they can take with them for a life time.

My Project

I have been blessed not only with wonderful students but with a donation of 25 free tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I would like to take a group of my students to experience this unique environment. However, we do not have transportation funds. With state and federal budgets, field trips for middle school students are non-existent even for our sports teams. I have already attended a teacher's workshop and know exactly the content and objectives I wish my students to experience. My objectives are three-fold. I want the kids to dig deeper into our Matter and Chemistry State Standards, apply their knowledge of our Investigation and Experimentation strands, and, finally, have a deep understanding of personal connections to our environment. I want my students to understand how everything is connected and their impact upon the world they will inherit and pass along to their children.

You can help make a difference not only in the lives of the students on the bus to Monterey.

The impact of these students seeing, touching, smelling and learning about the Pacific Ocean will impact all the people in these childrens' lives. They will go home with their log books, test results, graphs and data tables of their "real-world" hands on investigations. I can see them now; on the bus returning home, dreaming of sea and bursting at the heart to share their stories! Can't you?!
