My Students

We have bugs everywhere on campus! So we want our students to start learning "what is a Good bug and What is a Bad Bug". We have the insect nets to capture them but what we need is a way to identify them in the class. We also need to get ready to protect our vegetable garden.

Our class is Environmental Horticulture and we all come together to learn a little more about our natural world through the garden.

We have native plant gardens and are building vegetable gardens. Our public school has a wide range of kids representing so many cultures and abilities. But when it is time to go out onto campus and catch the bugs - they all seem exactly the same. The excitement is amazing to see in all of them.

My Project

We have a classroom made up of donated computers from parents, businesses and community members. So each student is able to use a computer. What we need are digital microscope cameras to take pictures of the bugs they capture. We need to do this because we do not kill the bugs we catch. We catch them, study them and then release them (good bugs and bad) so that they can continue their lives and jobs on the planet. Since we are planting a vegetable garden we want top make sure we are using good pest management techniques. This will teach the students to become better stewards of the planet by reducing the need for dangerous pesticides.

With the digital cameras the students will be able to study the details needed for identification, how pest control works, how they eat, walk and fit in to the environment.

A picture is worth a thousand words and the excitement of seeing something they just caught under a microscope may lead to a future career in entomology for some lucky students.
