I Can Touch the Alphabet

My students need alphabet materials that they can touch, sort, and manipulate to help them to learn their letters and sounds.

My Students

My students learn best by using their senses. Imagine a learning experience where you could use your sense of sight combined with your sense of touch to learn about the alphabet!

My students come from very diverse backgrounds.

Many students are from working class families. Many of my students enter kindergarten knowing very few, if any, letters or sounds. Our school is a building where all of the district's kindergarten and preschool classrooms are housed. Our building is implementing our first year of full day kindergarten for all students. Because many local districts do not offer full day kindergarten, our class sizes have exploded to 27-29 students.

My Project

I am requesting materials that will allow my students to manipulate the alphabet in a variety of ways. Students will use dough stamps to create letters in play dough. I am also requesting tactile letters, puzzles, beads and tracers that will allow the students to not only see, but feel the alphabet. Students will also explore the alphabet using the sense of touch with an alphabet tree and learning center kit that provides many 3-D letters for the students to manipulate.

This project will allow my students to have access to materials that will stimulate their senses.

By providing students with these materials, they will quickly learn their alphabet and be on their way to a successful reading experience!
