Using Young Adult Fiction To Get 9th Graders Reading
My students need these books to allow me to get my students interested in reading. I will use literature circles to best match up the book to the student's interest.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever read a book that truly spoke to you? Many of my students have not yet been that lucky and I am to change that!
My 9th grade students are about 60% Hispanic, 20% Black and 20% everyone else.
Over 60% of my students get free/reduced lunches and money is always an issue. The reading ability varies widely from 6th grade to college level. They work hard and are fun to teach. They also face serious problems outside of school such as teenage pregnancy, gangs and volatile home lives. Education is their way out of the precarious position they are in.
My Project
This project will allow me to get students introduced to fiction books that deal with situations they are familiar with. I picked two books that would appeal to boys (Monster & Twisted) and two that would appeal to girls (Speak & Wintergirls). These books deal with issues they would be familiar with, such as poor decision making, fitting in, anorexia, date rape and more. When they are finished reading the books in groups they will then do group projects (such as power point presentations) and teach the other students about the books they read in an effort to have them, in turn, read that book. Once I can light the fire with contemporary fiction I can then get them to start reading classic literature with less complaining and more comprehension.
I am asking for your help because the school I work for is very strict about buying novels for the classroom.
They will only buy novels that are on the approved list and many of them hold little interest for students whose idea of reading is text messages and tweets from their favorite celebrities. By funding this project I can introduce students to novels that are written for them, with topics that are interesting for them to read. Then once I have them reading, I can introduce the classics.
