My 9th grade students are about 60% Hispanic, 20% Black and 20% everyone else. Over 60% of my students get free/reduced lunches and money is always an issue. The reading ability varies widely from 6th grade to college level. They work hard and are fun to teach. They also face serious problems outside of school such as teenage pregnancy, gangs and volatile home lives. Education is their way out of the precarious position they are in.
