Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am honored to teach 11th and 12th grade Creative Writing and Literature at a unique charter school located near the California/Mexico Border. Nearly all of our student population qualifies in extreme risk categories – beyond social economic factors and free and reduced lunch (many of our students are wards of the court, run-a-ways, and mothers and fathers). It is our primary goal to offer a safe and rigorous educational realm for students who are often under-served in the school system.

We are requesting an LCD Projector that will allow students to re-vision their work in addition to art, speeches, and the literary works of others.

With nearly all of our students being English Language Learners, I hope to enable my students to read, write, and discuss like authors, using voices full of pride and honesty, by providing them with visual representations of literacy. Representations of literacy can come in all modes and mediums in life. It is my hope to use an LCD Projector to display student work, pieces of literature, as well as show paintings and "Ted talks" (lectures from people from all around the world on issues of social change and justice). By providing my students with various visual opportunities to learn, their literacy rates, in terms of reading, writing, listening and speaking-will improve a great deal more than if I simply passed out handouts and asked everyone to pay attention.

My Project

It is our goal to have an LCD Projector for our English classes and to be shared throughout the entire school. There are several reasons as to how an LCD Projector can benefit my students, the most important being their need to visualize literacy and then having the technological access to re-vision words, images, and thoughts. Being able to see their writing and ideas transform throughout the revising process would prove to them that their words are worthy of respect and honor. The process of writing, as any writer knows, requires continuous revision. Our class is rooted in the idea of re-visioning one’s work through different critical lenses in order to ensure the audience and writer are in full understanding of the piece. In order to assist in this re-visioning process, we are requesting an LCD Projector that will allow students re-vision their work in addition to art, speeches, and the literary works of others.

Your help will ensure that my students have the ability to visualize and re-vision their words, as well as those by others, in the manner that every critical thinker deserves.

I am often in awe of the integrity, honesty and trust they place into their analysis of literacy, and I know the rest of the world would feel the same if given the chance. I often tell my students that their experience and unique perspective are their gifts to the world. It is their responsibility to use their voices to educate and inspire change by passing on their words with the hope that others will then pass on their gained insight. And now I ask you to do the same, to give back what you can so that the recipients of your generosity can generate change and empowerment in others.
