My students need 8 graphing calculators to better understand physical situations that seem as unrelated as bouncing balls and the shape of the Golden Gate bridge.

My Students

Beyond graphing lies a love of learning and exploring whole new fields. The graphing calculators will open up a new way of seeing how different aspects of the world (like steel strength and free fall) can be described by the same set of graphs.

Our students are our future engineers, scientists, and road builders.

They're growing up in a sustainable world with a strong sense of personal responsibility. Allowing them the use of graphing calculators when they're at an age with highly visual input will dramatically impact the way they see how unrelated aspects of the world are fundamentally related through the same set of graphs.

My Project

Our 6th graders will more easily see how shapes are scaled and the translation/rotation/reflection of geometric shapes. Our 7th graders will have a much easier time seeing the way line slopes and intercepts change. Our 8th graders will be able to visualize quadratic functions and how the coefficients affect the graphing shapes. Our advanced algebra students will be able to visualize the unit circle with sine and cosine functions.

Graphing calculators help students see how coefficients and variables change the relationships between coordinates on graphs.

Students will see that the same mathematics describe vastly different situations - like carbon dating and bacteria growth, car tires and elevator cables. They will be empowered to use mathematics to problem solve in their daily lives.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
