My Students

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out.

Most of my students are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one.

We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 11-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed, and hopefully go to college.

My Project

Our biology supplies are depressingly minimal. Although we have relatively updated textbooks, we rely on them too heavily for lack of lab supplies. We have microscopes but not enough slides to use them frequently or for varied lessons. We have zero materials to help students understand microscopic things like cells and DNA. Although we know that hands-on learning is effective for most students, we are unable to provide this experience for them much of the time, and we are forced to go back to the textbook time and time again.

My students are amazed by the concept of a website like DonorsChoose and are thrilled by the idea that total strangers would donate money and supplies to them for, as they say, "no reason."
