Chemistry's Next Top Model

My students need a class set of 4 molecular modeling kits to assist with visualizing the complex shapes and structures of chemical molecules.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Chemistry is sometimes an abstract subject that requires a lot of imagination to visualize how tiny protons, neutrons, and electrons are arranged to make up a tiny atom. Being able to make tangible representations of these molecules will help my students make sense of their learning.

My students are great kids, in spite of the obstacles they face and what others have told them they cannot do.

Some of them have always struggled in science, so they have mentally shut down when it comes to science. For many of the students, this will be the only chemistry class they ever take, and it is only because it is a required course do they bother walking in the door. Many of them just want someone to believe in them, support them, and be genuine with them. However, make no mistake: they are typical teenagers!

My Project

Chemistry is abstract. It is oftentimes difficult to visualize a lot of the molecular shapes and arrangements without visual assistance. These model kits will assist with reinforcing the concept of crystal structures and molecular geometry. When I mention the word "face centered cubic" and show the students a picture, they will have a general idea. However, with these model kits, they can apply their learning by using their hands to construct the different molecular arrangements. It will give me the opportunity to formatively assess their learning, and correct mistakes at that moment, rather than waiting to discover on an exam that the student did not have an accurate understanding of the concept. This is of benefit to both myself and my students.

My students need a class set of molecular modeling kits to assist with visualizing the complex shapes and structures of chemical molecules.

This will assist my students immensely, especially those with limited English proficiency and those with other learning deficits and difficulties. My students will not only be able to parrot the information back to me, but they will also be able to apply it, which is essential to the learning process. With my limited English proficiency, struggling learner, visual learner, and kinesthetic learner populations, it will add dimension and assist in teaching them how they learn best.
