My Students

My bookshelf is empty! My 20 2nd graders are facing entering a classroom where they will have no books to read or from which to draw inspiration. Picture books tell a story in so many different ways and I want to be able to give that to my students. I guarantee that MY drawings won't be inspiring!

I am currently teaching second grade students in the state of Nevada.

I have a class of about 20 students. They are a sweet bunch of kids that enjoy learning and trying new things. The students in my classroom come from a variety of backgrounds. There are some that are in a traditional family and some where the family situation is very nontraditional. Most of the students come from a family where both parents (if there are two) need to work outside of the home to make ends meet. My school is pretty established in the neighborhood with students living in houses instead of apartments. It is a school where parents are involved in their child's education. As the students are pretty established, so are the teachers.

My Project

I am looking to stock my classroom with a collection of picture books that have been notable in their area as well as award winning. Some books that I want to use to inspire my students are "Duck and Goose," "Mr. Lincoln's Way," "Rosa," "Skippyjon Jones," "Miss Mingo and the First Day of School," "My Name is Maria Isabel," "Nothing," "Move Over, Rover," "I Ain't Gonna Paint No More," "Not a Box," "Where the Wild Things Are," "Jazz," "Why," and "Diary of a Fly." Knowing that I am a new teacher to second grade, I want to give my students the best literature that I can. I have been exposed to a lot of great ideas on how to use picture books to inspire writing, reading, and thinking skills. They are valuable to use as a way to express yourself without saying a word. I want my students to get a chance to use great books in the classroom.

The funding of this project would mean so much to my students and myself.

I have loved reading my entire life due to exposure to great books. I want to pass that on to my students. I know that they will be VERY excited to get their hands on books that will inspire them for a lifetime. Please help these inspirations happen in my classroom. Thanks SO much!!!
