Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Pop culture...reality television...My students have many idols, but there are true heroes and heroines of the past who have made our country great. However, they are not well known today. I would like for my students to read to learn about important Americans, and share that information with others.

My 4th and 5th grade students attend a school classified as "high poverty".

Many of them, if they choose to attend college, are the first generation in their family to do so. I teach them according to a multiple intelligences philosophy, in which I look for each student's talents and areas in which improvement is needed, and I encourage them in both. I provide opportunities for students to interact with computers and other technology during school, which they love. Some of them also do this at home. However, they do not read independently as much as they need to at home, and research has proven that even 20 minutes of reading per day helps students greatly. These high-interest books about great Americans will be used to build silent reading time at school and at home. When students have completed the book(s)that they choose, they will share their knowledge with other students in a way in which they excel, which could be a poster, multimedia presentation, or even costumed performance.

My Project

With the Chevron Teacher Grant for books for the classroom, my students will learn about great American heroes and heroines that they do not learn about in the pop culture of today, and improve their reading skills at the same time. They will each read one or more of the requested biographies throughout the year and share with the class the things that they found interesting. Without reading each book, each student will learn from the other students about many heroes/heroines of the past including presidents, first ladies, Native American leaders, patriots of the American Revolution and other wars, and important men and women of Westward Expansion and California History. At the same time they will increase their silent reading time, which is extremely important, because by increasing reading time they will independently improve their reading skill and learn about history at the same time. Sharing what they learn in a mode in which they choose makes them more excited about learning.

By supporting this project, donors will help my students understand through reading that this country was made great by people willing to risk and sacrifice for the good of the country and other people, and not always for financial gain.

These heroes of the past made contributions beyond just the athletic or entertainment fields, and often did it without privilege or wealth. What a powerful lesson for a fourth or fifth grader to learn!
