I teach at a charter school that for four years in a row has been the highest performing public middle school without entrance criteria in our city. Despite the fact that 98% of our students are African-American and 84% qualify for free or reduced-price school meals--two factors that would normally indicate low achievement in an urban school district--our students consistently achieve at high levels. Last year, 87% of my sixth grade students passed the state school assessment, one of the highest passing rates in the city. This year, I have been focusing intensely on what I can do to make sure that other 13% is reaching proficiency.

While most teachers would be content with most of their students reaching proficient marks, I KNOW there is a way to reach those few students who are still struggling and below grade level. In my experience, these students tend to shine when I use a lot of visual elements in my lessons. They will often struggle to complete a worksheet like the other students, but if I can model for them individually how to complete the task, they tend to be much better off.

After observing a suburban teacher using a document camera in their classroom, I realized this is the ideal solution to my problem. As I said, my lowest readers tend to have a hard time with verbal instructions, but are very successful when the task is modeled for them. I know that having a document camera in my classroom would be the perfect way to meet their needs all at once and have them feel included in every lesson.

While it would be easy to overlook this small percentage of struggling students, I know this is the way to reach those who are at risk of being left behind. There is no way that my school has the resources to afford this piece of equipment, but with your help, the students at my school can experience the same type of differentiation that suburban students receive. Please make this vision a reality!
