"I teach at a charter school that was the highest performing public middle school without entrance criteria in our city last year. Despite the fact that 99% of our students are African-American and 84% qualify for free or reduced-price school meals--two factors that would normally indicate low achievement in an urban school district--our students consistently achieve at high levels. Last year, 97% of my seventh grade students passed the state school assessment, one of the highest passing rates in the state.
