In the next few weeks, my students will be writing their own screenplays. The screenplays will follow both the structure of the five-paragraph essay as well as the pyramid of plot structure. To motivate my students and invest them in the project, I suggest that they consider this project to be a “real” screenplay. They are using scripped.com, a professional screenwriting program, to write their screenplays. The last piece of equipment we need to make this project complete are camcorders, with which my students can videotape their screenplays. As I have about 130 students in six different classes, I would love to have six camcorders, one for each class, so that groups of students can take turns checking out the camcorder for their project.

My students find it very difficult to grasp the concept of five-paragraph essays, which they need to master to pass the Arkansas 11th Grade Writing Exam, which they need to pass to graduate!

I have discovered that they are better able to understand concepts when they create projects of which they are proud. Writing and producing their own five-paragraph-based screenplays will be the key to mastering the five paragraph essay. First, I believe my students will be motivated and invested in the project. Second, by creating their own screenplays, they will be able to truly understand how a five-paragraph structure works.

My students really have little opportunity to be proud of themselves. I want to make this a huge project. I am talking to the local theater to see if they will donate their space for an evening so that my students can hold a Red Carpet "screening" of their movies, complete with dressing to impress, an Emmy award, and popcorn. Of course, it is important for them to pass the Arkansas writing exam, but equally imperative is that they have confidence and pride in themselves. You can make it possible for my students to see the product of their own creativity and hard work in the spotlight for once in their life!
