Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach in a very low-income, multi-ethnic elementary school in Southern California. I am currently teaching 5th grade, and my grade level is "rotating" our students to prepare them for middle school next year. I am the "science" teacher for 5th grade, which means I teach language arts, math, writing, and all other subjects to my 30 core students, and I teach science to all 90 5th graders. I'm the lead GATE (gifted and talented education) teacher for my school. I am also an adviser for an after school science and engineering program after school. Finally, I produce the School Yearbook, head the Science Fair, and assist with the Spelling Bee. I work with about 140 students each day, which is very unusual for an elementary teacher. I need to make copies of numerous materials for all of these kids on a regular basis, and our district provides each teacher with 2 (or sometimes 3!) reams of paper each month, regardless of how many students we work with or how many different jobs we actually do. Let me tell you, 2 or 3 reams of paper is not enough for the average elementary teacher who deals with 20 students, so you can imagine the vast shortages I run into in making copies for 140. Copies range from supplemental science materials, to book report and homework instructions, to engineering specifications, to huge lists of spelling bee words. The students also do a lot of writing and graphing and again, there are always shortfalls. The district provides each teacher with 3 reams of writing paper per school year, and no graphing paper at all, even though graphing and learning the 4 quadrants is a required topic for 5th grade. We need 20 reams of white copy paper, 4 reams each of blue and pink copy paper, 6 reams of green copy paper, 5 reams of lined notebook filler paper, and 3 reams of graphing paper for various copying and writing needs. For example, I send parent notes home on green paper, missing homework or misbehavior notes on pink paper, and school event notes, such as field trips and bake sales, home on blue paper. All other copies, such as homework, I send on whatever paper I've got, but I'd love to coordinate that and send it all home on white paper. The color coordination helps both parents and students keep track of important papers that get sent home. When I do run out of paper, which is inevitable, I sometimes ask the secretary, who also has a very limited supply. If she has any available, she'll help, but I don't like to rely on her, since she needs paper for other reasons and I never know when she'll have extra. I have been buying paper myself as I run out, but it has become extremely cost-prohibitive. Students will use paper daily to write, draw, graph, and have copies of notes, rubrics, and detailed instructions. They will also use paper to communicate with their families about school events, field trips, grades, and conferences. The first project the students would embark on would be to write thank you notes for your support. They will also participate in a science project that involves walking around the school and neighborhood and recording their observations, by both drawing and writing. This activity gets them into the frame of mind to observe and report on what they see. Your donation will help ensure that my students and their parents will always have copies available of any information they might need. It also will save the students the instructional time lost and possibility of inaccurate information of copying things from the board when I run out of paper. Thank you in advance for your generous donation.
