I am a speech and language therapist in Brooklyn and my caseload are junior high school students ranging in ages 12-16. My students are all high needs with varying capabilities from a general education stutterer to a fifteen year old non reader.

My students are coming into junior high school with skills that are 3-8 years behind their peers. Many of our students presently do not have a fighting chance to compete with their peers in the job market.

I need materials like manipulative rods and phonics games that will inspire teenagers to learn basic literacy skills that middle class children have mastered in early elementary school. These will help my students be more expressive in their written and oral language. We will use visual, tactile, auditory modalities within research based speech strategies to ensure success. My pull-out speech program is the last chance for theses pupils to learn basic literacy skills so that they do not drop out of high school. My first lesson would be to continue using read alouds and think alouds with the chapter book Travel with Ted from the Wilson program. Then, I would use the rod manipulatives that I'm requesting so that the teens could blend and segment them while creating the new word families encountered in the story. We would end the 30 minute session by reinforcing the sounds and word families with one of the games as a closing activity. For many of these teens, this is the most relaxing and non-threatening way for them to continue their long path to reading independence.

Please help me to continue to empower my students to stay in school and to learn those skills that are basic and will support them in helping themselves.
