Our students have fertile minds, but they struggle with organizing their thoughts on paper. I am the teacher librarian, and I work with several English classes in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade to help the students write compelling research papers.

Most of the students have chosen fascinating topics to research and write about --jazz music, global warming, French Impressionism, skateboards, mythology, bail enforcement -- but they are having a difficult time organizing the facts they are discovering into a coherent paper. My challenge is to help these students communicate their research topics with integrity and completeness by learning how to research and express their ideas effectively. These skills will last a lifetime as they transition into high school, college, and beyond....

I have created a marvelous graphic organizer template that students can make with construction paper, twine, scissors, and glue. They cut the paper in such a way that the paper strip creates flaps they flip up to reveal spaces in which to write the appropriate information that belongs in each paragraph. The easel pads will allow students in groups to practice various research skills to share with the class such as examples of research questions, note-taking, citation making, and writing introductory sentences that hook readers.

Your sublime generosity will help my students stretch their minds intellectually, organize their ideas, write effectively, and learn the various skills that are needed to research capably.
