Books for Our Study of India

My students need books to read for their story of India, rhythm sticks, and a world music CD and activity book.

I am a second grade teacher in a high-needs community. Currently, 90% of the students in my school are below the poverty line. I teach a class of remarkable students who deserve the best education possible! I have the extreme privilege of teaching the same group of students last year, where they made an average of 1.9 years growth in reading. I strive to expose my students to concepts, ideas, and knowledge that are not usually presented in my school community. It is not just about reading and writing. I want to imbue my students with the ability to think and reason. I feel very strongly about giving them experiences and exposing them to broad scale ideas.

This past summer, I was awarded a Fellowship to visit schools and study in India. As part of the fellowship requirements, I need to implement a curriculum about my trip. During the summer, I sent postcards to all of my students as well as pictures of me in India. I plan on doing a country study of India with my students, focusing a little on the history of the country, and having my students complete some comparison studies on modern day life in India verses life in the United States. I want my students to do their own research, and develop their own presentations that we can show to our families and the school community. Unfortunately, the school has no resources with which to provide my students this valuable information.

I am asking for a collection of books to be used in this study. I need books about India to use as whole class read alouds. I am also asking for a variety of children's books about life in India, as well as fiction stories that take place in India. These books are all on the reading level of my students, so that they are able to access the information themselves and perform their own research. This collection of books will not only bring the knowledge to my students but will spark their interest by providing them with a tangible means of learning. I am also asking for a class set of rhythm sticks and a world music CD. While in India, I had the chance to watch a variety performances of traditional Rajasthani musicians. I was able to capture some audio and video clips that I want to share with my students and have them learn how to perform some of these pieces.

I am totally committed to this wonderful group of children, and I would follow them all the way to 5th grade if my school would let me! The great reading gains and progress that my students made last year (and will hopefully make this year!) can be contributed to DonorsChoose and individuals helping me to provide my students with valuable learning opportunities. My students are thirsting for knowledge! Having the books and resources needed to complete this multi-disciplinary study will help for my students to connect to the curriculum in meaningful ways and expand their potential this academic year!
