This grant is for materials that are very useful at the beginning of the school year, and most of them continue to be useful throughout the year. They are not provided by the school district or individual school site. A heavy duty pencil sharpener is essential for the days when the common one in the office breaks down. Table caddies will help organize materials like scissors, crayons, and glue at every table. Book boxes will keep our library organized and accessible to students. Primary composition notebooks are perfect for these emergent writers who need space to draw and write. One of the first get-to-know you projects we do is a classroom puzzle in which we draw ourselves onto a puzzle piece and put the classroom together. I use craft sticks for picking kids randomly to do special tasks. They are also used for art projects, along with the SunPrint kit, which I have seen at a local Earth Day fair. I use stopwatches frequently for timed activities like math races and some reading. The overhead caddy is for general classroom organization. Every student needs a name tag on their desk that first day of school and for the entire year, and I have selected what I consider to be the most useful ones, with features like a number line and alphabet. Finally, I would like to get a box of awards to use all year long for birthdays and special recognition. Many of these materials can be used year after year, so your generosity will be enjoyed by multiple classes. All of these items help to make the beginning of the year a smooth one. I would be going out and buying most of them with my own money if it weren't for DonorsChoose.org and you. Thank you very much for your support!
