Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember the goof-ups, skits and comedy of the Candid Camera show, how even the simplest situation provided hours of fun? There’s no better description of my classroom. I am a kindergarten teacher at a challenged-performing school. The population, in which I work, is very diverse and the children are very lacking in basic educational needs. They have all of the potential, enthusiasm, and love that 5 year olds possess. Very few of them have gone to preschool or daycare. The community is economically deprived and sometimes unsafe.

My students sometimes use vocabulary that sounds awkward or they lack basic terminology. It is so easy to take for granted they know something, but then a situation presents itself and you realize they don’t. Their experiences and exposure to language is greatly deficient. There is little background knowledge to build on. When there’s no background knowledge then there’s nothing to talk about. The children look at me puzzled and wonder what am I talking about. In a kindergarten classroom, language is the key to learning. That’s what 5 year olds do, they talk and talk and talk. It is the vocabulary that I so desperately need to address in my class.

The resources that I am requesting are a series of photo libraries. These libraries are picture files that students can see and identify. The photos have the pictures and corresponding word underneath. Some of the photos provide the English and Spanish words. These libraries address all areas of the curriculum from science to math, social studies, and language arts. With these photo libraries, I can introduce new words with the picture. Students can easily acquire vocabulary and begin to use it in the appropriate way. Students can use the photos to build picture dictionaries, identify letters and begin the process of reading.

With your help I can provide a total learning experience to kindergartners. Those children who are most at risk I will be able to reach and no one will be left behind. There are some children who are not vocal. They are shy or will simply not speak. The pictures are wonderful visual aids that lend itself to discussion. It fosters talking, identification, sharing and building a sense of confidence. Through your generosity, I will be able to address basic terminology that no kindergartner should lack. I sincerely thank you for your support. You are so gracious to open your hearts to my class and me. I appreciate all that you do for teachers and most especially, the children.
