Mrs. Mayer Lincoln Middle School
Portland, ME Grades 6-8

I teach in a school where approximately 50% of our students are low income. Many students and children are refugees and had to leave many of their toys and belongings to come to America. Two of my favorite children's stories, "If You Give A Moose A Muffin" and "If You Give A Pig A Pancake" have given me an idea for a project that I would like to do with my 8th grade Family and Consumer Science Students. We have currently been learning how to plan and prepare healthy breakfasts following the My Pyramid Food Guide. My proposal is to invite children from area daycares to our school and have my students teach the younger kids the importance of eating breakfast and making nutritious food choices. The 8th graders would cook muffins and pancakes for the children to eat for breakfast and while they are eating, read these two beloved tales to the youngsters. We would play Food Pyramid Bingo and review the food groups with the Food Pyramid Party Activity as an ending activity. The benefits of eating breakfast and reading will be highlighted in this wonderful mentoring activity of having teens spend time with little ones. In prior lessons, I will review story-reading tips and positive ways to interact with children with my FACS students, since many of them already babysit or care for younger siblings. I feel that it is important to encourage healthy habits such as reading children's stories and eating breakfast, especially to these children, since many of them don't have children's books at home or their parents speak limited English. To complete this project, I will need 3 griddles, 3 muffin tins, 1 copy each of "If You Give A Moose A Muffin" and "If You Give A Pig A Pancake", 1 Food Pyramid Party Activity, and 1 Set of Food Pyramid Bingo Card. Please donate so that I may make literacy and nutrition come alive for both teens and young children in this fun-filled lesson!!
