Dictionary Detectives: Words Worth Discovering

Help me give my students age-appropriate dictionaries, sticky notes, poster paper, and markers so they can build vocabulary, engage deeply with complex texts, collaborate with classmates, and demonstrate their learning through meaningful literacy activities.

My Project

As a seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher, I help students build the academic vocabulary and literacy skills. Our EL Education curriculum places emphasis on close reading, word analysis, research, and academic discussion. To fully engage in this work, students need access to reliable resources that help them understand and apply new vocabulary.

While many students are accustomed to searching for definitions online, research suggests that print dictionaries encourage deeper processing of words.

Using a handheld dictionary requires students to slow down, analyze alphabetical order, identify multiple meanings, and examine parts of speech, pronunciation guides, and word origins. This active process strengthens vocabulary retention and comprehension in ways that quick digital searches often do not. Print dictionaries also eliminate distractions and ensure equitable access for all students, regardless of technology availability.

The dictionaries in this project will become an essential part of our daily literacy routines. Students will use sticky notes to mark unfamiliar words, record definitions, and track vocabulary growth while reading complex texts. Poster paper and markers will allow students to create collaborative vocabulary displays, word-study charts, and visual presentations that help them make meaningful connections between words and ideas.

Many of my students enter seventh grade with significant vocabulary gaps that impact their reading comprehension and writing performance. By providing print dictionaries and interactive learning materials, you will help students develop stronger word knowledge, greater confidence as readers, and the independent learning habits they will carry into high school and beyond. Your support will place literacy tools directly into students' hands and help them discover that words are not just definitions on a page—they are the building blocks of communication, critical thinking, and future success.
