This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading an essay about gender issues or nature is one thing, understanding the issues through the eyes of a character is another. Help me bring two Pulitzer Prize winners into my AP classroom!

My school is located in a socioeconomically depressed area.

Many of the students struggle with reading and don't have the resources at home to help them improve. My students know that their education is key to rising up out of stifling poverty, but that path has many challenges. They are great kids, but they know that their station in life right now isn't great. Many of them give up and fall into apathetic routines because the challenges they face are just too great for many of them. However, when the right book is in their hands, the world opens up to them; I don't have problems with phones or MP3 players in class, but I do have to tell kids to stop reading and focus on the task at hand.

My Project

These two texts will help my AP students see that issues regarding nature and gender exist in more than just essays. By exploring these issues through these texts, the door will be opened for more engaging conversations. Students will connect our reading to the text and vice versa. The units on gender and nature will be richer because of the inclusion of these texts.

Not only will these books help the students out by giving them more to talk about, they are incredible, Pulitzer Prize winning books!

The best way to become a better writer - besides writing - is to read. These are two of the best authors out there, and you can help bring their work into my classroom.
