My Project

My students are engaging in a new Project-Based Ecology course, and I want them to experience ecology as scientists—not simply learn about it from a textbook.

Our school is surrounded by diverse ecosystems that provide an incredible outdoor laboratory for studying relationships between living organisms and their environment.

To investigate these ecosystems, students need the tools real environmental scientists use to collect and analyze data.

This project will provide equipment for students to investigate soil and water quality in local ecosystems. They will collect samples, measure environmental conditions, and use their results to determine how physical and chemical factors influence ecosystems.

Students will use water testing kits to measure important chemical characteristics and collect and analyze soil samples for pH and nutrients. Measuring tapes and soil sampling equipment will help them systematically collect samples and compare conditions between locations.

These investigations will help students understand that ecosystems are interconnected systems. Changes in abiotic factors can influence organisms, populations, communities, and entire ecosystems.

Most importantly, students will work with real environmental data. They will develop questions, make observations, collect evidence, analyze results, identify patterns, and use evidence to support scientific conclusions—the same practices used by ecologists and environmental scientists.

Since this is a new Ecology course, these materials will establish a reusable field investigation toolkit that can support student learning for years to come. Students will have opportunities to get outside, collect samples, conduct tests, and experience authentic environmental science.
