Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will provide our classroom with sensory-table trays, tactile fillers like sand, water beads, pluffle, and beans, and hands-on manipulatives like scoops, tweezers, tongs, and mini figurines. Research consistently shows that children learn best in a play-based environment, and, for my students, sensory tables capture their focus immediately.

With these materials, an academic lesson becomes a fully immersive experience.

Picture my students standing around the sensory trays, keeping their hands busy while actively listening for beginning sounds. They will use tweezers and tongs to dig through the kinetic sand to find hidden letters, building the crucial hand strength and coordination they need for writing and using scissors and cutting tools. We will use the mini figurines to practice math concepts, physically counting and sorting animals by color to truly understand quantities like "more" and "less."

Most importantly, these sensory materials are incredibly inclusive. For my non-verbal students, an academic sensory play activity completely removes the barrier of spoken language. Instead of struggling to find a word, a student can show me what they know by pointing, sorting, or physically handing me an object from the table. The tactile input allows them to self-regulate, naturally building their attention span over time.
